Austin, TX

Hey y’all, I went to Texas and actually had (mostly) amazing gluten free food so I wanted to share my findings! This post was originally from August of 2016 – I went back in September of 2021 and was sad to see that several of these places went out of business. Always be sure to call ahead to ensure kitchen practices and menus have not changed.

Sawyer & Co | 4827 E Cesar Chavez St

The vibe was amazing at this place! It was a midcentury modern decked out diner! Several of the menu items could be made gluten free on the brunch menu so I am assuming it would be the same on the all day menu but definitely check! I went with the breakfast tacos because when in Rome. I alway find breakfast places to be the easiest to find options!

VIA 313 Pizza | 1111 E 6th StAustin, TX

This place was great. We went to the 6th St. location which is more of a food truck and the delivered our pizza into the bar next door. This was definitely top 5 GF pizza’s I’ve ever had. There are multiple locations all over the Austin area too.

Hopdoddy Burger Bar | 1400 S Congress Ave, Ste A190, Austin, TX

Not pictured: truffle fries fried in dedicated frier! WOO! But, don’t eat these burgers. Felt very not okay after eating here but I definitely took a risk eating here. The reviews were very 50/50 if the place was celiac safe or not. Check on the fries if you go but they were in a dedicated fryer when I was there and they were amazing.

Cenote | 1010 E Cesar Chavez St, Austin, TX

This place had the coolest vibe of all the restaurants we went to. Get the chorizo breakfast tacos and fall in love with bracos like I did.

Banger’s Sausage House & Beer Garden | 79 & 81 Rainey St. Austin, TX 78701

If you go anywhere in Austin go to Banger’s on Rainey St. They had a gluten free menu and those cheddar grits were to die for. My mouth is watering just thinking about this place. Instead of a bun they serve your sausage on a bed of fresh greens with a choice of sauce.

Frank’s | 4th & Colorado, Austin 78701

*Now Closed* Awesome late night snack stop. The waiter was super knowledgeable about the gluten free options. The gf bun was a little crumbly but not the worst bun I’ve ever had.

Max’s Wine Dive | 207 San Jacinto Blvd, Ste 200, Austin, TX

*This location is now closed but they have 2 in Houston* First picture is pulled pork stuffed piquillo peppers and the second picture is gluten free fried chicken. Yes, you read that correct. FRIED CHICKEN. Both of these were amazing and the chicken was cooked perfectly and in a dedicated frier of course!

Wildwood Bakehouse | 3016 Guadalupe St, Austin, TX

*Now Closed* The only 100% gluten free menu of Austin and they did not disappoint. Even my gluten eating pals were in love with the chicken tenders. We also got pizza, chips, and queso. Went all out for the last night in Austin.

      1. I think Austin is a bit more with it, but Dallas is getting better bit by bit. Next time you are in Texas, head to a Central Market, they are like a super fun version of Whole Foods! Lots of GF options too =). I’m a grocery store nerd, hah.
